Health Policy Institute of Ohio Receives $100,000 Grant for Operational Support from The Cleveland Foundation

Columbus, OH - The Health Policy Institute of Ohio (HPIO) announced today that it has received a one-year grant of $100,000 in support of its operations from The Cleveland Foundation. The grant will be used to fund the Institute’s general activities, which includes forecasting health trends, analyzing key health issues, and communicating current research to Ohio policymakers, state agencies and other decision makers.

"We deeply appreciate that The Cleveland Foundation finds value in what our Institute is doing," said Dr. William Hayes, HPIO president. "This grant will allow us to build on the vision of HPIO’s founding organizations and to continue working toward being an asset for all Ohioans."

The Cleveland Foundation is the nation's oldest and second largest community foundation; the foundation previously provided initial funding during the planning phase that lead to the creation of HPIO.

"While the focus of The Cleveland Foundation is on greater Cleveland, the health policy issues that affect our region are often decided at the state level," said Robert E. Eckardt, vice president for programs and evaluation at The Cleveland Foundation. "By providing reliable, impartial research and analysis to state policymakers, both Cleveland and the entire state will benefit."

HPIO is a newly created independent, nonpartisan organization. In addition to its work on analyzing and forecasting issues, HPIO also convenes discussions on important health issues for Ohio by bringing together representatives from various sectors with a keen interest in health matters, including policymakers, providers, media representatives, employers, advocates, health plans, consumers, state agencies and researchers.

The following foundations also provided up to five years of funding to start HPIO:

  • The Anthem Foundation of Ohio (based in Cincinnati)
  • The George Gund Foundation (based in Cleveland)
  • The Health Foundation of Greater Cincinnati
  • The Mt. Sinai Health Care Foundation (based in Cleveland)
  • Saint Luke’s Foundation of Cleveland
  • Sisters of Charity Foundation of Canton with the Sisters of Charity Foundation of Cleveland
